Greater Cabarrus Foundation Welcomes Three New Board Members, Expanding Perspective and Expertise

The Greater Cabarrus Foundation is proud to announce the addition of three exceptional new board members: Daryle Adams, Mike Downs, and Aalece Pugh, Ph.D. These individuals bring a wealth of professional experience, diverse perspectives, and a shared commitment to enhancing Cabarrus County. Their appointments mark a significant step forward in the Foundation’s mission to ensure broad representation and inclusive decision-making.
Cam Cruickshank, Ph.D., President and CEO of the Greater Cabarrus Foundation, emphasized the importance of diversity in board membership. “Adding diversity to our board in multiple forms is not just a goal—it is a necessity. Aalece, Daryle, and Mike exemplify the different geographic, generational, professional, and lived experiences we seek. Each of their unique perspectives strengthens our ability to serve and connect with every corner of Cabarrus County,” said Dr. Cruickshank. “From Aalece’s expertise in healthcare and human services to Daryle’s deep roots in education, and Mike’s extensive experience in government, they bring unparalleled insight to our board.”
Bob Bratton, Chair of the Board of Directors, expressed his enthusiasm for the new members. “We are thrilled to welcome Aalece, Daryle, and Mike to the board. Their talents, experience, and passion for Cabarrus County will undoubtedly propel our efforts forward. Together, we will continue to make a positive and lasting impact.”
Meet the New Board Members
Aalece Pugh, Ph.D.: Healthcare and Human Services Leader
Dr. Aalece Pugh joins the board with an extensive background in healthcare and human services. As the Assistant County Manager and Consolidated Human Services Agency Director for Cabarrus County, Aalece oversees critical programs and departments that impact the well-being of the community, including social services, behavioral health, veterans’ services, and public transit.
With a doctorate in Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia, Aalece is a licensed psychologist with a strong focus on evidence-based practices and trauma-informed care. She has dedicated her career to developing programs and policies that address complex social challenges, including oversight of Cabarrus County’s allocation of North Carolina Opioid Settlements and regional behavioral health initiatives.
Reflecting on her new role, Aalece said, “Joining the Greater Cabarrus Foundation board is an incredible honor. I look forward to bringing my passion for human services and my commitment to addressing systemic challenges to this new platform. Together, we can create meaningful change that uplifts every resident of Cabarrus County.”
Daryle Adams: Transformational Educator
Daryle Adams brings nearly three decades of educational expertise to the board. Born and raised in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Daryle’s journey in education began as a classroom teacher and evolved into leadership roles that have earned him national recognition. Currently, he serves as the Director of Career and Technical Education (CTE), Federal Programs, and Secondary Education for Kannapolis City Schools.
Daryle’s innovative approach to education emphasizes career readiness, equity, and community partnerships. His accolades include State CTE Administrator of the Year and the North Carolina Governor’s Award for Innovative Programming. Daryle’s cultural background and commitment to equity bring a valuable perspective to the board.
“I am excited to join the Greater Cabarrus Foundation board and contribute to its mission of building a stronger, more inclusive community,” said Daryle. “Education is a powerful tool for transformation, and I look forward to leveraging my experiences to make a difference in the lives of Cabarrus County residents.”
Mike Downs: Government Leader and Rural Advocate
Mike Downs is a seasoned public servant with 39 years of experience in local government, including 14 years as the County Manager for Cabarrus County. His leadership has been instrumental in guiding the county through periods of growth and transformation, including crisis management, urban planning, and public safety.
A resident of Mount Pleasant, Mike brings a unique rural perspective to the board, ensuring that the needs and voices of all communities in Cabarrus County are represented. With executive certificates in public administration from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Pfeiffer College, Mike’s expertise in governance and administration is unparalleled.
Mike shared his enthusiasm for joining the board, stating, “It’s a privilege to work alongside such dedicated and talented individuals. I am committed to using my experience in government and my connection to rural communities to help the Foundation achieve its mission.”
A Collective Vision for the Future
The addition of Aalece Pugh, Daryle Adams, and Mike Downs reflects the Foundation’s dedication to fostering a board that mirrors the diversity of Cabarrus County. Their combined expertise spans healthcare, education, and government—key sectors that are essential to addressing the county’s most pressing challenges. Beyond their professional achievements, each brings unique lived experiences that will enrich the Foundation’s understanding of the community it serves.
Dr. Pugh’s knowledge of trauma-informed practices and her leadership in human services will help the Foundation to better understand innovative approaches to community health and well-being. Daryle Adams’ experience in education and career readiness will inform efforts to strengthen workforce development and educational initiatives. Meanwhile, Mike Down’s extensive experience in government will provide invaluable insight into navigating public-private partnerships and addressing rural community needs.
Bob Bratton reiterated how these appointments align with the Foundation’s mission. “Our role is to drive lasting change, and we do that by bringing together people who are deeply connected to the community and understand its complexities. Aalece, Daryle, and Mike embody the spirit of collaboration, innovation, and understanding that defines the Greater Cabarrus Foundation,” said Bratton.
