Celebrating National Philanthropy Day: Connecting Passion to Purpose

By Avalin Inman

Each year on National Philanthropy Day, communities across the country pause to recognize the generosity, compassion, and vision of people who give of their time, talent, and resources to make the world a better place.

Here in Cabarrus County, philanthropy takes many forms—supporting early childhood programs, investing in affordable housing, strengthening health access, helping seniors, fueling arts and culture, and so much more. But at the heart of every act of giving is a simple, powerful truth: people want to make a difference in the place they call home.

Helping them do that is the mission of the Greater Cabarrus Foundation, and one of the people guiding that work is Robbie Furr, Director of Development.

Robbie joined the Foundation to help donors connect what they care about most with opportunities to create lasting community impact—whether through year-end gifts, donor-advised funds, or establishing long-term legacy plans.

“At the Greater Cabarrus Foundation, philanthropy is more than just a donation,” says Robbie. “It is an investment in a thriving, resilient community. We specialize in providing the critical operating support and capacity building that allows local nonprofits to address the root causes of issues like housing, health, and food security. Our mission is to ensure local money makes local decisions to meet local needs, creating a dynamic legacy that will last decades. Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference.”

Honoring the Spirit of Giving

National Philanthropy Day honors not just donors, but volunteers, nonprofit leaders, and everyday neighbors who step forward to make things better. Robbie sees that spirit every day in his work.

“Every gift tells a story—of a family, a passion, a hope for what our community can become,” Robbie explains. “My role is to help donors shape those stories in ways that address real needs, support the nonprofits they love, and create meaningful, lasting change across Cabarrus County.”

From establishing charitable funds to making annual contributions, local donors and community investors are fueling the Foundation’s mission in powerful ways. Their generosity—combined with the hard work of local nonprofits—is building a stronger, kinder, more resilient Cabarrus County.

Celebrating Philanthropy in Action

As the community observes National Philanthropy Day, the Greater Cabarrus Foundation celebrates everyone who plays a role in making Cabarrus County thrive:

  • Donors who give with purpose
  • Families who choose to build a legacy
  • Nonprofits working tirelessly on the front lines
  • Volunteers who show up day after day
  • Partners collaborating to solve complex challenges

Together, they are creating a brighter future for generations.

Looking Ahead: Making a Year-End Impact

National Philanthropy Day also marks the beginning of one of the most meaningful giving seasons of the year. Robbie encourages individuals, families, and businesses to think intentionally about the causes they care about—and how they want to support them.

“When you give with intention, your generosity becomes more than a donation,” Robbie says. “It becomes a legacy.”
