A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) is a powerful way to support the causes you care about while also providing income for yourself or your loved ones. It’s a planned giving solution that turns appreciated assets into a lifetime income stream—then leaves a lasting legacy through the Greater Cabarrus Foundation.
How It Works
You transfer cash, securities, or other assets into a trust. In return, you or your designated beneficiaries receive annual income for life or for a set number of years (up to 20). After the trust term ends, the remaining assets are used to create—or contribute to—your charitable fund at the Greater Cabarrus Foundation.
CRT gifts not only support our local community but also offer potential tax benefits, such as:
- A current-year charitable income tax deduction
- Bypassing capital gains on appreciated assets
- Reduced estate and gift taxes
Two Options, One Purpose
Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT)
- Provides a fixed annual payment—at least 5% of the original value of the trust.
- Example: A $500,000 gift provides $25,000 per year, regardless of market fluctuations.
Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT)
- Pays a fixed percentage (minimum 5%) of the trust’s value, recalculated annually.
- Payments rise or fall based on market performance—offering potential for growth.
