Greater Cabarrus Foundation to Provide Free Services to Nonprofit Agencies
Avalin Inman and Cindy Stone Special to the Independent Tribune
The newly launched Greater Cabarrus Foundation is poised to become a transformative force for nonprofit organizations in Cabarrus County, offering a range of free services designed to enhance the effectiveness and capacity of these vital community partners. The Foundation’s mission is rooted in collaboration, aiming to support local nonprofits by fostering collaborative partnerships and providing essential resources that allow them to serve even more people in the community.
“In Cabarrus County we are blessed to have some wonderful nonprofit agencies who perform outstanding services for thousands of people every day. Nonprofit agency capacity building is central to our mission and the provision of free consulting services is one of the ways in which we hope to help these wonderful agencies extend the outstanding work that they already perform,” said Cam Cruickshank, Ph.D., president of the Greater Cabarrus Foundation.
What does a community foundation do?
According to the Council on Foundations, a national organization which supports community foundations, a community foundation is a grantmaking public charity that is dedicated to improving the lives of people in a defined local geographic area.
A community foundation typically focuses on three primary areas: fundraising, grantmaking, and programming initiatives. Some community foundations focus their programming on arts and culture initiatives, while others focus on providing scholarships or natural resources.
Like other community foundations, The Greater Cabarrus Foundation will collaborate with donors, or what they call “community investors” to help donors achieve their philanthropic goals (fundraising) and will provide financial support to nonprofit agencies through a grants process (grantmaking). Meanwhile, programming for the Greater Cabarrus Foundation will be focused on capacity building through collaboration.
Fundraising
Fundraising, the first function of a community foundation, will be conducted by the Foundation staff and board of directors. While fundraising has yet to begin in earnest, to date, there have already been many generous gifts and pledges made to the Foundation which will be used both for start-up activities and future grantmaking.
According to Cruickshank, “Although we have not begun a formal fundraising campaign, the feedback we have received from community leaders, community investors, agency leaders, and the general public has been very positive.” Consequently, there is much optimism that community members will be willing to support the Foundation and its grantmaking priorities with investments in the community when fundraising commences.
grantmaking aligned with needs assessment

The grantmaking priorities for the Greater Cabarrus Foundation will prioritize supporting local agencies which address the greatest needs in our community as determined by the Community Needs Assessment, which is conducted once every four years by the Cabarrus Health Alliance, the public health authority in Cabarrus County. These social determinant issues identified in the needs assessment include ensuring access to stable housing, nutritious food, quality health care, educational opportunities, employment resources and other community needs.
“The Cabarrus County Partnership for Children is thrilled to collaborate with the Greater Cabarrus Foundation,” says Ann Benfield, executive director of the partnership. “The Foundation’s commitment to building the capacity of nonprofits will provide us all with the support we need to strengthen our efforts and achieve lasting, positive change for families in our community.”
capacity building through collaboration
The third function of the Foundation is to provide resources, professional development opportunities, and consulting services for the nonprofit agencies in Cabarrus County so that these agencies can grow their organizations to care for more in our community, expand their services, or make the resources go further. The Foundation will offer several key services to nonprofits across Cabarrus County, including:
Sponsorship and financial support for the:
- annual Community Needs Summit, in support of the Cabarrus Health Alliance
- annual nonprofit workshop, in support of Cooperative Christian Ministry
- annual nonprofit board training, in support of the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce
Quarterly nonprofit professional development workshops and networking for nonprofit agencies.
Interagency consulting services
The signature programming initiatives offered by the Greater Cabarrus Foundation are Interagency Consulting Services. These consulting services will be provided by volunteers who have served as nonprofit board members, agency leaders, and those who provide consulting services for a living. According to Cam Cruickshank, Ph.D., president of the Greater Cabarrus Foundation, “Cabarrus County is not only fortunate to have many highly effective nonprofit organizations, but we are also blessed to have many individuals who have much experience in nonprofit leadership roles, and in serving as nonprofit consultants. We are so grateful to have more than ten very experienced individuals who have volunteered to help other agencies.”
At this point, the Foundation intends to offer three different consulting services: an organizational review, impact reporting consultations, and tech tools for nonprofits. All these services will be provided free of charge and all Cabarrus County nonprofit agencies are eligible to request consulting services.
With the organizational review, agencies will first complete a self-assessment which will be used to identify some opportunities for improvement and will receive some focus and attention during the consultation. After sharing the self-assessment results with the Foundation staff, a team of consultants who have expertise in the areas of focus will be assembled. Then, the agency will host a one-day site visit and organizational review conducted by a visiting team of consultants consisting of a nonprofit board member, an executive leader from another agency, and a Foundation staff member or volunteer. This collaborative assessment provides valuable insights and recommendations to improve governance, marketing, fundraising, finance, volunteer management, client services, strategic direction, or any other aspect of the agency operations.
During the follow-up exit briefing, the agency will receive feedback on five organizational strengths, five opportunities for improvement, five recommendations for short-term low-cost initiatives, and five recommendations for longer-term strategic initiatives which may require resources.
Recently, 1CAN, a Cabarrus County nonprofit agency dedicated to reducing the number of children, adults and families suffering from food insecurity, has decided to be the first agency to receive free consulting services from the Foundation. “We are excited and honored to be the Foundation’s pilot agency for the organizational review. I am excited to see everything the Foundation is looking to do in the future. Cabarrus County nonprofits are blessed to have this foundation and you looking to help us,” said Sheryl Kluge, Executive Director from 1CAN.
Impact reporting consulting is the second type of free consulting services and will focus on helping agencies to better identify, track, monitor, and report on important data in which funders have a great interest. “Donors, funders, and philanthropic organizations are often extremely interested in measuring impact. Many prefer to give to organizations who can demonstrate their effectiveness in helping the community. We intend to help local nonprofits to improve the likelihood of being successful with their grant application efforts by being able to quantify and report on the impact that their programming makes,” Cruickshank said.
The third area of consulting services the Foundation is planning to provide is technology tools for nonprofits. Agencies today need to have a quality website, a database tool, an accounting platform, and basic office technology to run effectively. Volunteer consultants organized through the Interagency Consulting Services program at the Greater Cabarrus Foundation will help by providing tools, training, and recommendations in this critical area.
Ed Hosack, CEO of Cooperative Christian Ministry is pleased to be one of the Greater Cabarrus Foundation volunteer interagency consultants. “One of the wonderful things about providing consulting services to other organizations is that the consultants also learn something from every organization they serve. For example, while a consultant may be asked to help another organization improve marketing and fundraising, the consultant is also likely to learn a better way to do volunteer management, client services, or some other operational function,” Hosack said.
By providing these critical services, the Foundation will position itself as a vital partner in addressing the county’s most urgent needs, building a stronger, more resilient nonprofit sector. Foundation President Cam Cruickshank emphasized the intent of the Foundation programming and free consulting services, “We really wish to demonstrate how we will add value to the community. While fundraising and grantmaking are important components of our role, we also wish to fill in gaps and help agencies to grow, fully self-actualize, and flourish for many years to come.”
Nonprofits are encouraged to reach out to the Foundation if they wish to inquire about programming, request an assessment, or ask for support. Please contact us.
