A Season of Generosity and Smart Year-End Giving
By Robbie Furr
As we step into this season of lights, reflection, and celebration, I find myself especially grateful for the generosity that defines Cabarrus County. Thanksgiving reminds us to pause and appreciate the people and partnerships that make our community stronger. And now, as we turn the corner into the holidays, that spirit of gratitude naturally becomes a spirit of giving.
At the Greater Cabarrus Foundation, we’ve witnessed this firsthand during our first 18 months as a new community foundation. Donors, volunteers, and nonprofit leaders have welcomed us with open arms, helping us establish endowments, launch our inaugural grant cycle, and build a long-term structure of support for local agencies. Your investment, whether through giving, partnership, or simply sharing our mission, is already making a measurable difference.
This time of year also reminds us that philanthropy isn’t just about dollars, it’s about belonging. It’s about neighbors looking after one another. And it’s about ensuring the well-being, stability, and opportunity that every Cabarrus County resident deserves. When you invest in the Greater Cabarrus Foundation, you’re investing in people: children learning to read, families finding stability, seniors accessing care, and nonprofits growing stronger so they can meet rising community needs.
The holiday season is also the perfect time to take advantage of several tax-smart giving opportunities that can maximize both your impact and your personal financial benefits:
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from IRAs
- If you are age 70½ or older, a QCD allows you to give directly from your IRA to the Greater Cabarrus Foundation. These gifts can count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and may reduce your taxable income, a win-win for you and the community.
Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs): Supporting Tomorrow While Saving Today
- If you have a DAF, a year-end grant to one of our Funds is a powerful way to support local priorities while maintaining the tax advantages you’ve already received.
- You can also open a new DAF or add to an existing one before December 31 to take advantage of 2025 charitable tax deductions, while giving yourself time in 2026 to thoughtfully support the nonprofits and causes you care about most.
This approach offers immediate tax benefits now, paired with the flexibility to plan your philanthropic strategy later. It is a smart and generous way to begin the new year.
Gifts of Appreciated Stock and Other Non-Cash Assets
- If the market has treated you well this year, consider gifting stock directly to the Foundation. This allows you to avoid capital gains tax while receiving a charitable deduction for the fair market value. It’s an especially strategic way to give during strong market years.
Year-End Cash Gifts
- Simple, heartfelt, and impactful. Cash gifts, whether to the Greatest Community Needs Fund or one of our Field of Interest Funds, directly support the work of nonprofits addressing health, education, economic stability, and quality of life for Cabarrus County residents.
As we enter the final month of 2025, I invite you to consider how you might continue, or begin, your own tradition of holiday giving. Your year-end contribution is more than a gift; it is an investment in a better, stronger future for our neighbors.
Thank you for believing in the power of local philanthropy. Thank you for believing in Cabarrus County. And thank you for making this season brighter for our community.
Wishing you a warm, meaningful, and joy-filled holiday season.
